Marvel Adds the Sentry to Its June Lineup

Introduced in 2000 in The Sentry #1 by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee, the hero was written into Marvel’s decades-long continuity. From the final pages of Doctor Strange #382, the Sentry was reintroduced into the Marvel Universe. After helping Stephen Strange defeat Loki to reclaim the title of Sorcerer Supreme, and then recapturing the Void and putting him in back in captivity the Sentry will start a new solo series from writer Jeff Lemire and artist Kim Jacinto, debuting June 27.

One of the most powerful and complicated heroes in the Marvel universe it will be interesting to see what Lemire will do in the comics pages. After an absence of several years, the hero and his evil counterpart, The Void, are back and Lamire shared some thoughts of the reintroduction of the hero.

“The Sentry is a fascinating character,” Lemire told ComicBook.com. “I absolutely loved the original Sentry series by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee when it first came out, so I jumped at the chance to write the character. The Sentry has a lot of emotional depth, and a lot for me to dig into in terms of the psychology of the character. He is immensely powerful and has the potential to be one of the greatest and most important heroes in the Marvel Universe, but he is constantly undermined by his own dark side and his own self-doubt.”

Lemire also teased the evolution of the Void and Sentry’s relationship, saying, “You cannot have The Sentry without the Void. But what I was very conscious of was not simply retelling the same stories that had been told in the past with Sentry and Void. I want to see their relationship and their characters evolve and go in new directions.”

According to Lemire, the new series will “start a few months after the events of Donny Cates’ Doctor Strange.” Jacinto also noted that his artwork would change between “a bit clean to dark and gritty” to reflect one of the two different universes in which Sentry will be active.

The Sentry #1 debuts in June. Bryan Hitch (The Ultimates) will provide the cover for the first issue.
