Walt Disney Pictures has revealed that Iron Man 3 has earned $1.142 billion globally after five weeks of release. That puts Iron Man 3 in rare company, as the fifth-highest grossing film of all time. The only movies ahead of Iron Man 3 on that list are James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic, Marvel’s own The Avengers, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.

Additionally, Iron Man 3 holds the record as the second-highest domestic opening of all time at $174.1 million, just behind Marvel’s The Avengers‘ $207.4 million. Disney/Marvel’s latest has outperformed Avengers in key foreign territories including China, Hong Kong and Russia. It’s the biggest film of all time in Malaysia.

There is no argument that 2013 is a blockbuster years for movies. We are already well into a year that is well represented by Sci-Fi and Superhero movies. Which of those movies is the most anticipated and will do the best? Keep in mind anticipations of future events do change depending on when a person is asked. Iron Man 3 debuted on May the 3erd and has been listed as one of the most anticipated films of the movie season. Iron Man begins the second phase of Marvel superhero movies and Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013. 20th Century Fox will release The Wolverine July on 26, 2013. This movie is not part of the Disney/Marvel second phase of movies because it is part of the X-Men movie properties still owned by Fox. What does this mean to Superhero movies in the future? Has the bar been raised too high for Warner Brothers attempt to introduce the big screen DC Universe iconic super heroes. That remains to be seen with the release of Man Of Steel on June 14th this year.

In every interview that the big three Nolan (producer), Goyer (writer) and Snyder (directer), they say that any further movies about the DCU depend on the performance of the Man Of Steel movie. What are they looking for exactly to justify a 200 million dollar budget on a new film? They are looking for results that rival the Nolan Dark Knight Batman movies. Opening Weekend on the last Nolan movie Grossed $158,411,483 with a total domestic gross of $534,858,444 and the total market Worldwide: $1,004,558,444. Excellent numbers by any standards and in the top 10 of all movies ever produced. Yes the billion dollar range would do it, that is unlock the pocket books of Warner Brothers officials. The 2006 June release of Superman Returns opened to $52,535,096 and finished with a total worldwide market gross of $391,081,192, it turned off the money flow for Superman movies till this year with Man Of Steel. Also the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie released in 2011 to bad reviews and poor box office with only $219,851,172 total gross worldwide. This movie that cost them 200 million to make. This made many of the WB money trust be apprehensive of producing any more superhero movies.

So what happened to get Warner Brothers to entertain the idea of more superhero movies. Marvel Studios happened and the great success in the first phase of movies that came out and culminated in the all time number one superhero movie Avengers. The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Iron Man 2, and Thor build up to the Avengers movie and dominance in the movie market featuring super heroes. There is a market out there for quality movies about super heroes and Nolan and company seem to be able to tap into it with a USA and world market. Perhaps the Nolan produced Man Of Steel movie can be the door that unlocks the DC universe of superheros to the big screen. The Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Batman and the Justice League have all be suggested as possible  future movies. Not to mention another Superman adventure on screen possibly directed by Zack Snyder. This is all good stuff and it is fueled by the competition in movie producers. There are winners and losers and movie goers pick them so pick well and enjoy your 2 hour escape to entertainment. Stay tuned comic and movie faithful for more. 🙂 Walt

Did not think a sequel could do this well.

I like Robert Downey I think he makes the success of the movie. Without him the movie would not have done as well.
