Tom HardyTom Hardy has signed on to star as Venom/Brock, with established Spider-Man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach on board alongside Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer. October 5, 2018, has been earmarked as a release date, so Sony is going to have to get a move on.
Put that with the news that a film starring two other Spider-Man allies/antagonists – Black Cat and Silver Sable – was also in development, it raises a lot of questions how you would make movies about Spider-Man characters without the main man himself Spider-Man. The answer may be found in the agreement between Marvel and Sony about the use of Spider-Man as a title movie. “The Amazing Spider-Man 3” has been cancelled. While Marvel’s Kevin Feige is involved with Sony’s new “Spider-Man” films, he is currently not expected to be creatively involved with the spinoffs, sources say. Any creative work with Spider-man by Sony will not involve a reboot of the hero at this time but the spinoff characters from the Spider-Man legacy can be used in a feature movie.
This makes the way for Venom and the Black Cat and Silver Sable movie, but without Spider-Man the chance of the series of films doing well is slim even with Tom Hardy on board. There is reputable information that Andrew Garfield and Sony are renewing their negotiations to bring Garfield back to make cameo appearances in the new films. Now that would get the attention of movie goers out there who were disappointed that there was never an Amazing Spider-Man 3.
The new movies would remain in the Sony continuity of movies with the Marvel movies staying in the MCU. What this means for the future of Spider-Man in the movies is not clear. If Marvel does not secure the Spider-Man as a movie property then it would revert back Sony. At some point in the future Sony would have to make a film about Spider-Man that fans like to make it worth the money they invest in production of more movies. If they can’t do that, then this would open the door for Marvel to get back Spider-Man in the MCU.
It looks like the fate of Spider-Man is in the hands of movie fans, if the movies by Sony or Marvel make good money then they will continue. If the studios do not make money then they would loose interest in more movies. Spider-Man is the most popular hero in the Marvel world of characters.
