Silver Surfer 1 and the Impericon

On March 26 Dan Slott had a book signing at the Forbidden Planet Comic Shop in New York City and I am sure he was questioned about the direction he was going in the new series Silver Surfer. It reminded me of the movie I saw as a child called Forbidden Planet. It stared Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen and of course Robbie the Robot. It was years ahead of it’s time in 1956 and was a landmark classic in science fiction. It had interstellar travel ray guns and flying saucers, light speed travel and aliens. Plus it had a great story and wonderful acting and a lot of action. That is what story writing is all about. Dan Slott is a master of the different and unknown and should be great put in the interstellar world of the Silver Surfer. We are not in Kansas anymore and not on earth but in the stars the home of the Silver Surfer.

He was born Norrin Radd on the planet Zenn-La, part of an extremely long-lived and technologically advanced humanoid race which had created a worldwide utopia devoid of crime, disease, hunger, poverty, and want of any kind. Norrin’s life changed forever when a menacing alien spacecraft pierced Zenn-La’s long-neglected defense systems. Norrin convinced the Council of Scientists to provided him with a spaceship, Radd confronted the invader, Galactus, who intended to consume Zenn-La; Radd offered to become his herald and seek out new worlds for him to satisfy his hunger in exchange for Galactus sparing Zenn-La and his lifelong lover Shalla-Bal. Galactus agreed, transforming Radd into a silver-skinned, cosmic-powered super-being patterned after an adolescent fantasy plucked from Norrin’s memories. Known thereafter as the Silver Surfer because of the silvery flying board he rode, Radd departed Zenn-La with Galactus.

Now The Silver Surfer is now no longer the herald to Galactus he is free to travel the galaxies as he sees fit. In Silver Surfer #1 he creates a sun for a race of peoples and rejects their worship they wanted to give him for saving them from annihilation. As one of the most powerful beings in the universe he is then sought out by the Impericon as their champion. The Impericon has eluded the Silver Surfer and heralds Galactus detection by technology never seen by the Silver Surfer in all his travels of the universe. But now they need a champion against a force they call the Never Queen. He agrees to champion them but after being tested by Zed the Motivator of Truth he is told that they the reason he was scanned was to find the one person of all creation who means the most to him. The person is used to motivated the champion to fight for the Impericon. In anger he asked who this person was that they kidnapped, they show a earth woman that the Silver Surfer does not know. The last panel has the next issue title of The Most Important person In The Universe.

The story is well written by our man Dan Slott and Michael Allred the art work by Michael and Laura Allred is like the art work of Ron Lim in volume 3 of Silver Surfer, very majestic and simple at the same time. This looks like a winner so far can’t wait to get the next issue and learn more about Dan Slott’s attempt to bring the Silver Surfer to comic store. Stay tuned for more comic faithful. 🙂 Walt
