Amazing Spider-Man the Movie Review

The Amazing Spider-Man 2012

Spider-Man is Marvel’s most identifiable hero not because he is the most powerful or smartest or invincible but because he is just like us with all the problems of life of a young person growing to adulthood. And its cool he can walk on walls and swing through the streets. The latest version of the Spider-Man movies the The Amazing Spider-Man a reboot of the legend started by Stan lee and Steve Ditko in 1963 does a decent job of retelling the story of Peter Parker and how he became Spider-Man. The film is directed by Marc Webb.  It is the fourth Columbia Pictures film and is a reboot of the Sam Raimi film series with Andrew Garfield as the title role of the superhero.

The film shows Parker as his super powers are evolving in high school and Peter trying to discover the truth behind the death of his parents, and discovering himself in the process. The film will also feature artificial webs fired from custom designed wrist-mounted guns, which are invented by Parker as they were in the comic book series, rather than the organic webs depicted in the previous films.

A young Peter Parker is playing hide-and-seek with his scientist father when he discovers his father’s study has been broken into. His father, Richard, gathers up hidden documents, and Peter’s parents take him to the home of his Aunt May (Sally Field) and Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) then mysteriously depart. Years later, a teenage Peter attends Midtown Science High School, where he is bullied by Flash Thompson and has caught the eye of Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). At home, Peter finds Richards papers, and learns his father worked with fellow scientist Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans) at OsCorp. Faking his way into OsCorp as one of a group of high-school interns, Peter sneaks into a lab where extremely strong “biocable” is being created from genetically modified spiders, one of which bites him. On the subway ride home, he is shocked to find strange spider-like abilities manifesting.

The film introduces the Lizard/Dr. Curt Connors as the first super villain to be faced by Spider-Man. Actor Rhys Ifans described the character he is playing not as an evil-incarnate villain but as a flawed character, much as with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. And so Peter must learn what it takes to be a hero after the death of Uncle Ben he vows to catch his killer but soon learns heroes don’t operate on vengeance. He is combating the Lizard and trying to save what little humanity Dr. Curt Connors has left in his alter ego. The story develops the romantic relationship between Peter and Gwen Stacy who happens to be the daughter of a New York City Police Department captain played by Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy.

The 3D is very good and acting is outstanding. The camera shots tried to show the point of view of Spider-Man as he swung through the streets and was successful in giving the feeling you were swinging through New York. The camera also showed how big New York City really is, something the earlier movies never really showed. Don’t leave early mid way through the credits and additional scene adds more mystery to a possible sequel you know if coming if the movie does well. I would say 3 1/2 stars out of five worth the price of admission. We are there for you looking for entertainment quality at Comics Talk. Stay tuned comic faithful for more. 🙂 Walt
