Tom Cruise stars in the action-adventure horror film about an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of “Kingsman: The Secret Service”) whose destiny was unjustly taken away from her. Safely entombed in a crypt beneath the desert sands for centuries, she is awakened in the present day, bringing with her malevolence that grown over millennia. “I saw her,” Cruise’s character says breathlessly. “She is real.”

In development since 2012, “The Mummy” is the first installment of the long-discussed Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe, which will revive the studio’s classic movie monsters. Also in the pipeline are films featuring the Invisible Man, the Wolf Man, Van Helsing, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Bride of Frankenstein.

Directed by Alex Kurtzman from a script by John Spaihts, the film also stars Jake Johnson (“Jurassic World”), Annabelle Wallis, Courtney B. Vance (“American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson”) and Russell Crowe (“Gladiator,” “Man of Steel”) as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. “The Mummy” opens June 9, 2017.
