Star Trek: Discovery will return for its second season Thursday, Jan. 17, on CBS All Access. The move from Sundays was announced this afternoon during the show’s panel at New York Comic Con.
It took a while for me to warm up to this new Star Trek TV series last year. I was bothered at first by the look of the Klingons and the advanced technology plus the total change in that era and the look of the bridge and ship in general. Then I realized that the original series was made in 1966 making it over fifty years old. This realization helped me accept the modernization of the series with the producers bringing the look of Star Trek into the 21st century.
After the sixth episode, I was onboard and intrigued with the direction of the series to tackle the parallel universe with duplicates of the prime universe that are quite different than their counterparts. They also introduced the Spore Drive technology which could almost instantaneously transport a starship to another part of the universe.
The acting was excellent with Philippa Georgiou, captain of the U.S.S. Shenzhou and mentor to Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) the central figure throughout the series. Jason Isaacs did a wonderful job as Captain Gabriel Lorca who the story revealed was from the parallel universe. So many twists and turns with surprises every week. Season 2 is much anticipated by Star Trek Fans.
In addition to the introduction of Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, and Ethan Peck as a young Spock, it was revealed during the panel at NYCC that the second season will see the return of Michelle Yeoh as Georgiou.
Philippa Georgiou, captain of the U.S.S. Shenzhou and mentor to Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), died in the Battle of the Binary Stars, which set the events of Season 1 into motion by causing a war with the Klingons. However, she returned to the series as her Georgiou’s Mirror Universe counterpart, the fearsome emperor of the Terran Empire. After Emperor Georgiou escaped to the prime universe, she struck a deal with the Federation to allow her to go free in exchange for her assistance in the brutal war against the Klingons.
Thanks to the NYCC we now know when we can enjoy the series exclusively on CBS All Access. Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, Mary Chieffo, Anson Mount, and Michelle Yeoh.
