Reported: James Gunn and Warner Bros. Are In Talks

TheWrap has reported that Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn and Warner Bros. are in talks to write and direct Suicide Squad 2. So says The Hollywood trade’s unnamed source who said Gunn is “in talks” to direct the sequel.

As you remember Gunn was fired from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in July after offensive tweets from his past resurfaced. Marvel Studios is reported to still be using Gunn’s script for the film, but it has been delayed indefinitely while the search for a director is underway.

The cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy films lobbied Disney to rehire Gunn, but Disney chairman Bob Iger held firm on the decision. Gunn was previously interested in writing and directing a Thunderbolts film for Marvel Studios, which in some comic book versions carries a similar premise to Suicide Squad.

Dave Bautista who plays Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, has been one of the most vocal of Gunn’s supporters earlier this year, going so far as to threaten to leave the now on hold sequel if Gunn’s script isn’t used. Bautista tweeted “Where do I sign up!” in response to the report that Gunn is in talks with the WB.

It looks like DC Films is trying to set up their future movies with the best talent they can find. Suicide Squad although it did well at the box office making $746,846,894 worldwide with $325,100,054 in the US, the movie was a disappointment to critics and many moviegoers. Warner Bros. hopes to turn that trend in DC Films around in future releases of new movies. No projected release date for the film has been announced.
