Rorschach, the fan-favorite character who provided the narrative voice for Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s Watchmen, will return in the Watchmen sequel Doomsday Clock.
Following the Doomsday Clock panel at New York Comic Con today, DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns released the first six pages of the story online in the form of a black-and-white ashcan, physical copies of which were distributed to the audience at the panel. Characters of the series have just been hinted at up till now.
The teaser imagery that many had taken to mean Rorschach would return, series artist Gary Frank recently posted a video of himself drawing Rorschach on social media.
The scenes pictured in the preview pages take place in 1992, a few years after the original Watchmen. They are narrated by Rorschach, whom Johns referred to as an “unreliable narrator” in a press event the last night in New York.
In Watchmen, Rorschach’s journal was used as a framing device for the series, and ultimately ended up in the hands of a right-wing, conspiracy-driven newspaper at the end of the book.
The question of whether Rorschach’s journal ever found its way out of the “crank pile” and into the cultural mainstream will be answered in the first issue of Doomsday Clock.
