Paul Bettany As The Vision and Trailer Avengers 2

The Vision

Paul Bettany, who actually wears a suit this time around as opposed to simply voicing J.A.R.V.I.S., was a guest on BBC’s The One Show. While most of the conversation was dominated by talk of the Age of Ultron premiere, Comic-Con and his mysterious character, he also brought with him a clip from the movie. Though there’s no sound, you can watch a cape-less Vision emerge and even grapple with Thor for a hot second at the 5:07 mark in the video above.

The origins of Vision in the film is a bit of a departure from the comics, though he’s essentially a child of Ultron. After Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) creates him with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) in his laboratory, Ultron attempts to prove himself better than his creator. One of the many ways he tries to do so is in making an artificial intelligence of his own. When the Avengers first encounter him, they’re not sure which side he’s on or if they can trust him. And the fact that his first instinct is to tackle the Asgardian Avenger is not a good sign.

Vision has a wide-range of abilities in Age of Ultron, chief among them being super-strength and endurance. As Bettany told us during San Diego Comic-Con last year, the character also has control over his density, which is “exploited brilliantly.” Without giving too much away, he’s a major force to be reckoned with and will prove to be a hazard. But he’s not the only new character being introduced. In addition to James Spader’s Ultron, we have Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaw, Thomas Kretchmann’s Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, the latter of whom Vision is “protective” of, as Bettany said.

Avengers: Age of Ultron will open in U.S. theaters on May 1, but Bettany has already teased major plans for his character in the MCU moving forward. He said a couple months ago, “I know they [Marvel] have plans,” and hinting that he doesn’t normally know if he’s going to have a job six months out. So it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing him pop up in the near future. Might he show up in Captain America: Civil War?
