The Marvel Studios Phase 4 plans are going COSMIC, with it rumored to included an Eternals movie. Is it possible that Marvel Studios will be adding another COSMIC team with Eternals? Will Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige announce the Eternals movie soon?
With The Avengers: Infinity War coming out this month as well as next year’s The Avengers 4 featuring Thanos, who is an Eternal, a movie based on the characters down the line certainly seems to be a real possibility. If it does happen will they make it comedic like Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok? Or could Eternals have more of a straight science-fiction approach, something in the tone of Blade Runner 2049?
This would not surprise me if the MCU used the Eternals to counter the fact that the DCEU is creating their New Gods movie and both properties were created by Jack Kirby. It is similar to Marvel going with Captain America: Civil War following DC announcing Batman Vs. Superman.
In the comics, the Eternals were created by the Celestials who performed genetic experiments on early humans. Two branches were created, the Eternals and the Deviants (Thanos has the Deviant gene, which explains why he looks different), and they were given powers that include the ability to manipulate cosmic energy. Their first appearance in The Eternals #1 (July 1976) written and drawn by Jack Kirby.
While the Eternals have never been extremely popular in the comics they are very much a part of the cosmic history of the Marvel Comic Universe and can do well in Phase 4 of the ever-growing cinematic world that Marvel Studios is creating. Maybe we will see a hint of their existence in the Infinity Wars movies or at least in the post-credit scenes. There are many Marvel properties that have yet to be introduced in the future Quasar, and Nova just to name a couple more cosmic based beings.
The sky’s the limit for Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige and if they plan the next 10 years out as well as the last they will sell a lot of tickets to please the fandom. As Kevin Smith always says they have my money.
