Marvel Comics has provided ComicBook.com with a statement in response to the news that writer Brian Michael Bendis will be leaving the publisher to write exclusively for DC Comics.
Bendis has been a writer at Marvel for over 15 years, and the statement reflects the longstanding relationship between the writer and the publisher.
Bendis confirmed the news, retweeting the DC Comics announcement.
“This is real,” Bendis tweeted. “I love you all. Change is good. Change is healthy. I am bursting with ideas and inspirations. Details to come! Stay tuned!”
Bendis is the recipient of multiple Eisner Awards. He began working at Marvel Comics in 2000, reimagining Peter Parker’s origin for a new generation in Ultimate Spider-Man.
Bendis also reshaped the Avengers, beginning with the “Avengers Disassembled” story, which ended the ongoing Avengers series and disbanded the traditional team. He then launched New Avengers, a modern take on the Avengers with a new roster that included Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Spider-Woman, Spider-Man, and the Sentry. While considered risky at the time, the launch of New Avengers brought the popularity of the Avengers to new heights.
Since then, Bendis has written most of Marvel’s biggest characters, including the X-Men, Iron Man, Daredevil, and the Defenders. He’s also created some of Marvel’s most popular new characters, including Jessica Jones, Miles Morales, and Ironheart, and penned several of Marvel’s biggest events, including House of M, Secret Invasion, Siege, and Civil War II.

I have met Brian Michael Bendis a couple times in the past few years and think of him as an intelligent veteran story teller and comic book creator. He was a great interview and very candid about the comic book industry and his place in it. He was part of the reason Marvel recovered from the clutches of bankruptcy. His new fresh stories with “Avengers Disassembled” in 2004 got my attention and the superhero saga and rebuilding of the Avengers into one of the best selling comics of that time.
He set the Marvel Ultimate Universe on fire with his work with Mark Bagley on the Ultimate Spider-Man which highlighted his ability to work with a great artist and get the most out of their relationship. His relationship with Marvel was very strong for over 15 years he contributed to their success.
Some of Bendis’ fans and comic readers have said that he has lost the ability to put together a great story lately with his work on Guardians of the Galaxy, and Civil War II and their critical words about these comics being sub par for him. While everyone has a low point in what they do I am not sure the criticism was justified.
For whatever reason Bendis has decided to move on and work for DC Comics. Can you imagine him writing a Superman story or shaking up the Justice League stories with his view of DC characters. Things are always changing in the comic book world and that’s what makes it so interesting. We will be there when he gets his first assignment to take on a DC Project or title.
