Joss Whedon Heads To DC To Direct Batgirl Movie

WB continues building their Batman movie franchise with none other than Marvel’s The Avengers director Joss Whedon on Batgirl.

Variety reports Joss Whedon, known for his take portraying women in a good light, is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl movie as part of the DCEU.

WB also has the Matt Reeves Batman movie, the David Ayer Gotham City Sirens film, and a Nightwing movie in development.

It’s further said that presently no other producers are attached to the Joss Whedon Batgirl movie, but the film has Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, overseeing with DCEU co-runners Jon Berg and Geoff Johns.

Regarding Joss Whedon and Marvel, Whedon left Marvel following The Avengers: Age Of Ultron where it seems he was burned out after dealing with Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter and his Marvel Comics Creative Committee, who were said to cause all kinds of interference (Feige has since parted ways with Perlmutter and the MCCC).

It seems Whedon just needed time off to recoup, and now we see he’s headed over to the direct competition.

This is pretty huge for WB and the DCEU.

Joss Whedon’s Avengers movies brought in over $2.9 billion for Marvel.

Update: It’s reported the Joss Whedon Batgirl is Barbara Gordon.

However, it’s been questioned just which version as in the comics there are different characters that have portrayed Batgirl including Betty Kane, Helena Bertinelli, Cassandra Cain, Stephanie Brown and Barbara Gordon.

According to EW.com, Joss Whedon’s Batgirl movie will follow the Barbara Gordon version (which means we’ll most likely also see J.K. Simmons in the film, as Simmons is playing Commissioner Gordon in the DCEU Justice League and Batman movies).

EW.com also reports the Joss Whedon Barbara Gordon movie will follow the Gail Simone DC comic book in that it will be a harder-edged storyline – like Simone’s comic – rather than the more “comical, playful ‘Batgirl of Burnside’ series that was rebooted in 2014, featuring the hero as a social-media obsessed student living in a hipster neighborhood of Gotham.”

The Gail Simone Batgirl comics follow Barbara Gordon after she was attacked and paralyzed by the Joker in Batman: The Killing Joke, which may mean Batgirl, similar to Affleck’s Batman (and assumed Nightwing) is already a part of the DCEU (and might not go through an origin story; again similar to Affleck’s Batman).

It is noted it’s unclear how much of Whedon’s Batgirl movie will incorporate Gail Simone’s Batgirl work, but the point seems to be Whedon’s Batgirl will be more edgier/darker than the goofy take of Batgirl as a social media hipster. Posted By: Matt McGloin

2 Thoughts to “Joss Whedon Heads To DC To Direct Batgirl Movie”

  1. Joss Whedon is public cancer at this point. His political views and outspoken hatred will NOT be forgotten by half of America. The WB has a future PR nightmare on their hands.

  2. “Joss Whedon to write…etc”. No he’s not. As your first paragraph states, he’s in talks. Please stop with the misleading, clickbait headlines.
