Can Jane Foster Appear Alongside Thor?

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for “Mighty Thor” #11, on sale now.

Following the surprising conclusion of last issue, after Thor had been injured and placed under arrest by S.H.I.E.L.D. only for Jane Foster herself to seemingly arrive out of nowhere, Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman conclude their arc featuring the showdown with Roxxon C.E.O. Dario Agger in “Mighty Thor” #11. All of this takes place as Agger’s self-destruct mechanism counts down to the destruction of his floating Roxxon Island, and by association New York City below it, with his rivals Exterminatrix and Silver Samurai still aboard the island on the verge of its destruction. Thor, meanwhile, desperately seeks Jane’s assistance in removing Exterminatrix’s golden “Midas” bullet that is quickly killing her.

The issue opens with flummoxed S.H.I.E.L.D. agents standing, jaws agape, as Jane assists Thor, having all but concluded through their investigations that the two were one and the same. Multiple interests clash as Jane tends to Thor, Exterminatrix and Silver Samurai take out whatever S.H.I.E.L.D. agents they can and seek to rob what they can from the island before it crashes, while Agent Roz Solomon demands that Agger, still in his minotaur form, halt his so-called Agger Imperative. Agents shoot and disable Agger before he can halt the destruction protocols, and the island begins its deadly plunge downward through the sky.

As Exterminatrix and Silver Samurai decide to flee for safety rather than pillage, they are taken out by a recovered Thor, as Roz flees the freefalling island with Jane in tow. During their escape, Jane drops the golden bullet removed from Thor, which begins to transform the island itself into solid gold. Jane strangely and momentarily disappears, as Thor’s recently-absent hammer Mjolnir is next seen hurling through the sky, blasting a path through the plummeting island and back into Thor’s possession, in time for her to successfully halt the island’s uncontrolled descent just shy of the New York skyline. With the artificial construct now a solid mass of gold, the asteroid-like object is shown floating towards the sun, presumably pushed in that direction by Thor, melting in space as it approaches its eventual destination.

Safely aboard the Helicarrier, and with the presumed connection between Jane and Thor now seemingly dashed, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents officially apologize to her, as Dagger, Exterminatrix and Silver Samurai are all taken into custody. The mystery still remains, however, to both readers as Thor herself, as to how Jane Foster even appeared in this manner, as well as to who she truly is.

Jane then reveals to both Thor and Roz she is none other than Mjolnir itself, who forged itself into Jane’s form in a one-time-only effort to help her, professing her worthiness while doing so. As the hammer resumes its true form, Thor reveals to an already flabbergasted Roz that she is, in fact, Jane Foster. The exchange brings into question the exact nature of Mjolnir, one that Thor herself now questions, and when she physically touches the hammer, both she and Mjolnir unexpected disappear in a flash of light, leaving Roz even more incredulous than she was a moment earlier.

The next issue blurb promises “The Untold Origin of Mjolnir” in “Mighty Thor” #12, on sale October 19.
