Zack Snyder: Man of Steel ignore all previous Superman films

Zack Snyder and Superman

The Sucker Punch director plans to treat the Big Blue Boy Scout the way that Christopher Nolan handled the Dark Knight—as if none of the films that came before existed. Will that way lead to success or failure? In planning his path to bringing Superman to the big screen once more, Snyder seems to have realized that a break from the past—a break that Bryan Singer’s Richard Donner-esque Superman Returns resolutely refused to commit to—is mandatory. In an interview with the L.A. Times, Snyder revealed his plan:
“Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we’re making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there’s been no other Superman movies. … If you look at Batman Begins, there’s that structure, there’s the canon that we know about and respect but on other hand there’s this approach that pre-supposes that there haven’t been any other movies. In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies.”

Snyder’s got his cast—including Henry Cavill as Superman, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and Kevin Costner playing Jonathan Kent and now Michael Shannon as Zod—and an unprecedented chance to dig deeper into who Superman is:
“Superman is the one constant in the universe. … You know that if you do Superman right—or at least if you do him with respect—you know you end up with something great…. [but] in some ways [beyond] that is virgin territory. No one knows what that is. In some ways Superman is the most recognizable superhero on the planet but also the most unknown. Just what he can be?”

No mater what you think of his decision to reject the Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh incarnations this will be one on the most anticipated movies of this century. Mostly because of the Christopher Nolan influence and the record setting success he had in the Dark Knight. Hollywood has not always looked at the comic character himself and the legend but created their own version of that hero which gave us the TV version of the Adam West Batman. It was more of a joke than the Joker. And they may have missed the mark with the Superman movies of the past. The legend became Christopher Reeve or Brandon Routh or George Reeves. They all did outstanding jobs and produced a visual version of Superman. And now we can add the 10 year story called Smallville staring Tom Welling which ended with the manifestation of the Superman character.

My contention is that Superman is far bigger than any one man but has grown to legendary levels. From the times that World War II planes had Superman drawn on the aircraft and he became a symbol of truth, justice and the American way, he has brought hope to the thought and heart of humans, showing us that we can be more than we are and overcome the hard things and be strong in tough times. We escape from ourselves and troubles as we join Superman in his adventures with his fight against evil. He has the powers of a God but is gentile and dedicated to doing the right thing. He truly is a product of his child hood with Ma and Pa Kent and gifted with a great heritage from his Father Jor-el. Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster created something more than the first super hero we see and when Zack Snyder finishes “Man of Steel” we all who follow Superman will know if it is special even if we don’t understand what exactly we are looking for in that movie. We will wish Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan well in their making of the movie and hope they put something outstanding together. We will see you at the movies. Stay tuned comic faithful for more. 🙂 Walt

Dude this movie is going to be so bad ass. I’ve been waiting for a Superman movie to be made that doesn’t portray him as a cheesy superhero. I believe all Superman fans are going to love this movie!
