Tom Cruise May Play Green Lantern On One Condition

Tom Cruise

I was holding off reporting just rumors about the next actor for Green Lantern’s Hal Jordan but it has got to the point I felt that it is time to address that rumor. Tom Cruise is reportedly open to taking on the role of Hal Jordan in DC Films’ Green Lantern Corps movie but there is one major condition before he closes a deal to suit up.

According to Crazy Days and Nights, Warner Bros. is in talks with Cruise for the role of Green Lantern but the current script calls for Hal Jordan to die which Cruise is against. The actor is asking for this part of the script to be changed before he takes the gig.

Green Lantern Corps is currently in development with a script from DC Comics legend Geoff Johns. Official plot details are not known, however, Johns’ new production company Mad Ghost Productions has confirmed the film will feature the debut of Hal Jordan and John Stewart, two of the most popular characters to put on the Green Lantern ring, in the current DC cinematic universe.

Green Lantern Corps is one of the many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC Films, along with The Batman, a Flash standalone film, The New Gods, Man of Steel 2, Nightwing, Cyborg, Gotham City Sirens, Birds of Prey, Black Adam, Booster Gold, Justice League Dark, Suicide Squad 2, Batgirl, Blackhawk, and a standalone Joker origin film separate from the shared cinematic universe.

It sounds strange to me that if Ben Affleck is too old to play Batman at 46 as some are saying then why is it ok to have Tom Cruise play Hal Jordan at 56. Put aside his younger look as a man in his fifties, is that how you want to start a franchise? Also, why would the script kill off Hal Jordan in his premiere film? If we are being reintroduced to Jordan after their 2011 film which failed in DC Films expectations why kill him off.

The report sounds forced and remains totally in the rumor category as far as I am concerned. Until I get more concrete information about the facts in the cast I will not explore this story any further. Please comment and let me know if you feel the same as I. We are ever on the search for news worthy content at Comics Talk. 🙂 Walt
