Supergirl is being re-introduced this September with a new restart of the character. The female Girl of Steel and what will be different about her is not clear but she is getting some new threads. Wow has her costume changed over the years. She was created by writer Otto Binder and designed by artist Al Plastino in 1959, and she first appeared in Action Comics, in whose first issue Superman himself was introduced. The official first appearance of Kara Zor-EL was in Action Comics #252 you see a great example of the first costume on the cover. She had a costume that was very modest in today’s standards but very feminine.
Then things began to change by her Death in Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1985 her costume was very different. And after the John Byrne restart of Superman there was the new Supergirl Matrix again a new look. Beginning in September 1996, DC published a Supergirl title written by Peter David. The 1996 Supergirl comic revamps the previous Matrix Supergirl by merging her with a human being, resulting in a new Supergirl. Many old elements of the pre-Crisis Supergirl are reintroduced in new forms. The woman that Matrix merges with has the same name as pre-Crisis Supergirl’s secret identity, Linda Danvers. The look changed again very different from the past costume. The Matrix Supergirl was wiped from existence by the events depicted in the 2005 limited series Infinite Crisis.
Now there is the current version of Supergirl in issue #8 of the Superman/Batman series originally published in 2004 re-introduced Kara Zor-El into DC continuity. She had a new two piece suit that was very short and not much material. That character is leaving and being replaced by the New DC Universe Supergirl that looks quite different. We all love Supergirl and can appreciate the change in costume over the years. She is the female surviving Kryptonian and she should look feminine. Way cool! I think suit looks more Kyptonian. Very similar feel to he mother is the New Krypton series. It is almost gives a grown up costume feel as well, and it is about time since she is like almost 60 years old.
