We knew the lead character in Star Trek: Discovery would be female – and not a captain – but turns out we won’t learn her name… at least, at first.
“When we introduce our protagonist, she is called Number One,” Fuller told Ain’t It Cool News – noting that the moniker’s a tribute to Majel Barrett‘s character from the original Trek pilot.
We will learn our new hero’s name by the end of the first 13-part season, though…
Why just 13 episodes? Fuller thinks any more would “fatigue the show”, saying: “I would strongly recommend that we never do 26 episodes. Ideally I would like to do 10 episodes. I think that’s a tighter story.”
The first three scripts for Discovery have been completed, with four and five in the works, and Fuller confirmed that we’ll get our first casting news in October.
“We’ve met with fantastic actors – and of course there are people I’ve worked with before that I’d love to see on Star Trek,” he said. “We’re trying to figure out everybody’s schedules.”
Lee Pace as a Vulcan? Mads Mikkelsen as a roguish space pirate? We are down.
Oh, and in case you still weren’t sure, Fuller’s 100% confirmed that his Trek is set in the original TV universe – and is unrelated to the new film reboots.
“There was the cleanliness of keeping our series independent of the films,” he explained. “That way we don’t have to track anything [happening in the movie universe] and they don’t have to track what we’re doing.”
So long as we’ve got a whole heap of new Trek to enjoy, we’re happy…
Star Trek: Discovery will debut on CBS All-Access – and on Netflix outside of the US – in 2017.
