Man, I unapologetically loved this movie. Watched the Ultimate Edition after skipping the theatrical release and I thought it was great. I thought the Martha scene was decent rather than stupid. Batfleck is off his rocker, so close to ‘victory’, and absolutely consumed by his hate for Superman. Hearing his mother’s name, a loss they’re explicit in showing he’s still actively dealing with, finally woke him up.

Why does Supes know his mother’s name?

Why is he saying it now?

OH, that’s Supes’ mother but I have a hackneyed chance at making right at not being able to save my mother?

I think going forward we’ll see a more traditional portrayal of Batman from Affleck; however, I also think we needed this hardened vigilante to starkly contrast the Batman we expect. He’s broken and he shows it.

It was really interesting to watch Daredevil Season 2 a week or two before watching Batman v. Superman, as it approaches many of the same questions – how far should a vigilante go, what are they responsible for, etc. – but in much more nuanced way.

Granted, Daredevil had many more hours to explore those themes, but Batman v. Superman’s problem wasn’t that it was too short to explore them; it’s that it barely seem to understand those questions or why they’re important.

Superman and Batman would’ve had plenty of reason to come into conflict without Lex being involved; his presence was frustrating both because it was unnecessary and because it greatly reduced the drama of the conflict between the characters. "Some obnoxious kid tricked us into punching each other until we realized our mom had the same name" is just an objectively weaker story than "We came into conflict with one another because of our incredibly different and fundamentally incompatible philosophies."
