The First Time Superman Died

“Death of Superman,” in Superman #118 (January, 1958) A gangster named Blacky Barton impersonates Superman at a masquerade party in order to lure the Man of Steel into a Kryptonite deathtrap. Which does not work because of a special power of Superman plus the fact it was imitation Kryptonite. In this issue Superman shows the power to control his heart rate.

“Death of Superman,” from 1961’s Superman #149, by Jerry Siegel, Curt Swan and Sheldon Moldoff. This imaginary story was told in three chapters. In the initial chapter, Lex Luthor appears to have renounced his life of crime!!!

Superman even speaks on his behalf at a special parole hearing after Luthor cures cancer. Luthor is set free. Some criminals then ask Luthor to help them kill Superman, he says no, that he is Superman’s friend now (naturally, Luthor figures Superman is keeping an eye on him, and he is correct). So Superman gives Luthor a signal watch like Jimmy Olsen’s. Superman later builds Luthor his own private space lab and one day, Luthor’s signal watch calls out to Superman. Then Lex sets a trap and kills Superman from Kryptonite exposure he even turns green. Then Lex Luthor is captured by Supergirl who takes Superman’s place as world protector. She hands him over to the people of Kandor because Superman was Kryptonian and the judge sends Lex to the Phantom Zone Forever. This is an imaginary story but very gruesome for the time. I am sharing this to let you know that the death of Superman was thought of way before Doomsday was created. Stay tuned for more good stuff from Comics Talk. 🙂 Walt
