John Carter Movie Review

John Carter

I just saw the new Walt Disney production John Carter. John Carter is a 2012 American science fiction action film that tells the adventures of John Carter, the heroic character of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 11-volume Barsoom series of novels (1912-43). The film marks the 100th anniversary of the character’s first appearance. The movie is largely based on A Princess of Mars, the first novel to feature the hero John Carter.

The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter of the Civil War who is suddenly transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris. In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands. Taylor Kitsch plays John Carter in a believable role as both Civil War captain from Virginia and superhero of Mars. The beautiful Lynn Collins plays Dejah Thoris the Princess of Mars who reluctantly is coerced into a marriage that wants no part of with Sab Than a warlord who would rule Mars played by Dominic West.  Mark Strong plays Matai Shang an immortal who wants to control the outcome on Mars.

The acting was good the story did the novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs justice and portrayed the characters with the passion they deserved. The story was slow to develop but picked up speed and when it ended you wish it did not. A perfect place for a sequel I think. Which makes sense because of the series of novels written by Burroughs. The action was well done the special effects very good you really thought you were on Mars. The different aliens and multi-armed creatures were amazing. I think a movie I would see again. I recommend the movie John Carter for your viewing pleasure. 4 out of 5 stars for me. We are here for you at Comic talk with reviews and just plan fun. Stay tuned Comic faithful for more. 🙂 Walt
